An ABN tells you an entity exists and is registered. It doesn't tell you the business is real in the way that matters: that it has a footprint, a history, and details that line up. Plenty of shell operations carry a perfectly active ABN.
So what actually separates a real supplier from a convincing front? Patterns:
- **Age and consistency.** A GST registration that started last month, paired with a domain registered three weeks ago and no web history, is a story. One new thing is normal; three at once is a flag.
- **Footprint.** Real businesses leave traces — a working website, an email domain that authenticates, a directory listing, some social presence. Absence of all of it is information.
- **Address reality.** Does the registered address resolve to commercial premises, or a residential unit with no listing? Street-level checks answer what the paperwork can't.
- **Name alignment.** Does the trading name actually match the entity behind the ABN? Mismatches are worth a question.
None of these is damning alone. The skill is reading them together — which is exactly what an assurance rating does: it weights ten signals into one score, so "is this supplier legit?" gets a number instead of a gut feel.
Verification isn't about distrusting everyone. It's about spending your scrutiny where the pattern says to.
